Spectrum CE System

Forensic analysts have a busy schedule filled with processing challenging casework samples and planning urgent, last-minute runs. The Spectrum CE System is a capillary electrophoresis instrument designed to offer more efficient STR analysis and better results, built with input from forensic professionals all over the globe. The result? An instrument that checks all the boxes on your wish list.

Save Space and Time
Good design means more than just looking pretty on a lab bench; it also means caring about how you interact with Spectrum on a daily basis. Knowing that lab space is often at a premium, we designed the door to open vertically, providing quick access to consumables without knocking things off your bench.
Capacity Where It Counts
Forensic analysis has many challenges; running sample analysis shouldn’t be among them. That’s why Spectrum CE System has capacity for up to four plates of samples, including the ability to run a partial plate. Batching can be a thing of the past.

Smooth Operator
Sometimes you can benefit not just from good hardware choices but also from smart software that gives you a push. Spectrum CE System comes loaded with features to have you quickly running analyses. The software’s ease of use can reduce training time and daily operation effort.
The Spectrum CE System was designed with forensic laboratories in mind to make CE analysis as easy as it gets. An experienced CE user can be up and running on the instrument within an hour. New users will also find the software intuitive and easy to understand.
Spend Less Time Importing and Tracking Samples
Spectrum features automatic recording of plate bar codes and automatic importing of plate map files—making importing sample names a one-click process. There is less opportunity for error with an exact record of the plates analyzed and easier, faster operation.
Tame Your Most Challenging Samples
Whether you face degraded samples, unseen levels of inhibitors or other kinds of challenges, the Spectrum CE System supports 8-dye technology. Get results you can use, no matter the condition of your samples.

PowerPlex® 18E profile of 0.5ng 2800M Control DNA amplified for 30 cycles in 25μl reactions. Electrophoresis performed on the Spectrum CE System. Data analyzed using GeneMarker® HID Software for Spectrum CE Systems.
Amplification of ancient DNA. DNA was extracted from a petrous bone sample ~800 years old and quantified with the PowerQuant® System. An aliquot was amplified with the PowerPlex® 35GY System and analyzed using the Spectrum CE System. Despite sample degradation, complete genetic information above threshold was obtained from a total of 16 loci plus Amelogenin.
High-Quality Results from All Your Samples
We evaluated the performance of the PowerPlex® 35GY System on the Spectrum CE System, including results from a comprehensive concordance study performed in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Download the brochure.
The PowerPlex® 35GY System allows co-amplification and detection of 35 loci, 24 autosomal, and 11 Y-STR loci (left panel): CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, FGA, TH01, TPOX, vWA, D1S1656, D2S441, D2S1338, D10S1248, D12S391, D19S433 and D22S1045, SE33, Penta D, Penta E and Amelogenin; DYS391, DYS385a/b, DYS390, DYS438, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS481, DYS635 and DYS643. Control amplification of the allelic ladder is also shown (right panel).
Majority of Autosomal STRs are Less Than 325bp
The PowerPlex® 35GY System simultaneously amplifies 35 different loci, including the CODIS 20 core loci, three other highly informative autosomal loci, both Amelogenin and DYS391 for gender confirmation, and ten additional Y-STR loci. The inclusion of Y-STR loci increases the amount of genetic information obtained in a single amplification and can provide valuable data for familial searching. It can also assist in the analysis of sexual assault evidence.
With the two additional colors for detection, there are a total of 15 autosomal STR loci smaller than 250bp, which benefits the analysis of challenging samples.
The PowerPlex® 35GY System allows co-amplification and detection of 35 loci, 24 autosomal, and 11 Y-STR loci (represented by lighter shades): CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, FGA, TH01, TPOX, vWA, D1S1656, D2S441, D2S1338, D10S1248, D12S391, D19S433 and D22S1045, SE33, Penta D, Penta E and Amelogenin; DYS391, DYS385a/b, DYS390, DYS438, DYS448, DYS456, DYS 458, DYS481, DYS635 and DYS643.
Detect Inhibitors with an IPC
To help you better interpret the quality of your STR results, the PowerPlex® 35GY System is the first PowerPlex® system to include two Quality Indicators, QIS and QIL. The Quality Indicators take the guesswork out of determining if amplification was successful by confirming if DNA is present or if the sample amplification was inhibited. Knowing whether a sample was degraded or inhibited lets you decide whether to repeat sample analysis.

Quality indicators for the PowerPlex® 35GY System. Balanced QIS and QIL peaks indicate a successful STR profile (Panel A). An STR profile with balanced QIS and QIL peaks but no STR peaks indicates that no template DNA was amplified (Panel B). A sloping STR profile with balanced QIS and QIL peaks signals degraded sample (Panel C). A sloping STR profile with a low or missing QIL peak suggests the sample is inhibited (Panel D).
Compatible with the Kits You Already Love
Spectrum CE System supports 8-dye technology, but if you’re comfortable with existing 5- and 6-color kits that your lab has already validated, we’ve got you covered. You’ll be able to continue using those same products and still take advantage of the increased throughput and flexibility the Spectrum CE System offers.
PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System
2800M Control DNA (500pg) was amplified with PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System. Amplification products were separated using the Spectrum CE System.
GlobalFiler® PCR Amplification Kit
2800M Control DNA (500pg) was amplified with GlobalFiler® PCR Amplification Kit. Amplification products were separated using the Spectrum CE System.
System Consumables and Components
We’ve designed the Spectrum CE System to provide simplified setup and operation. Related consumables, such as prefilled buffer and polymer, are offered in convenient, ready-to-use packaging. Spectrum uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to track key consumables with minimal “hard stops” limited to situations where there is a risk of instrument damage.
